The Form beyond the Infinite is a sculpture competition promoted from the 28th january to the 4th May 2005 by Milan's City Council's Departement of Funeral Services in cooperation with Sofonisba.
The competition was created as a way to enhance the beauty of the square infront of a cemetery in Bruzzano, by establishing a contemporaneous sculpture created by a young emerging artist .
This initiative is the occasion to confirm a continuity with the tradition of funerary art, which established itself as an important artistic movement in Milan since the second half of the 18th Century. The accomplishment of the "Cimitero Monumentale" in 1866 can be considered as the official opening of a cultural season of great value. After a century, this tradition unfortunately began to decline: as a result, the conception of cemeteries as a place of culture and beauty was gradually forgotten.
The Milan's City Council marks through this event an important beginning in the domain of a wider project aimed at emphazising funerary art, in order to give an aesthetic contribution to urban cemeteries and to encourage and involve young artists by commissioning the realization of the work to the winner of the competition.
The panel, formed by prof. Stefano Zecchi, art critic Gabriele Simongini, M° Alberto Ghinzani, dal M° Giovanni Conservo, M° Antonella Colombo, assessor Giulio Gallera and monitored by Arnaldo Pomodoro has awarded Daniele Steardo for his work "Uroboros".
Sofonisba has realized the following activities:
- preparation of competition's official announcement ;
- preparation of the popular campaign and communication;
- public relation management;
- study of the graphic design for the catalogue and posters;
- organization of the final exposition and award ceremony.
